Off to Oslo

Image by Jewel Samad / Getty Images

The president and first lady are off to Oslo, Norway where the president will receive the Nobel Peace Prize.

For her overnight travel, Mrs. O has paired a cropped Alaia jacket (last seen in Prague) with black pants and boots. A red scarf adds a splash of color.

Landing in Oslo, Mrs. O has changed ensembles, wearing a custom-made, lavender coat by Narciso Rodriguez with a coordinating lilac scarf and purple leather gloves. This combination is the same that the first lady wore during the inauguration, for a ceremony at Arlington Cemetery.

Oh I love it! I have a thing for scarves and blazers and she wears them so well here; I love the splash of color. I also really like her new twist on the "updo" - she has done a lot of different and interesting variations of it in the past few days. She is certainly never boring!

Lovingly in sync!

This is how I travel - all black. Very nice and simple. Mrs. O is going to knock them dead in Norway. The speech is first thing tomorrow morning at 6 am EST. I think all of the major networks plan on showing it.

Here's the nobel website which will have live coverage too.

Mrs. T, are you going to post the picture of the Obamas with Oprah. It's a promo for Oprah's special on Sunday.

This look like a photo shoot for some kind of commercial. Very Nice!

I just love this travel look and red scarf on Mrs. Obama. That Alaia jacket can go a long way in any wardrobe.

Don't they look great together and happy? And check out our dapper, handsome President! (That's called class and swagger ladies and gentlemen.) After a long hard day, this site and seeing our First Couple just makes me smile!

This photo also made me smile, Janelle!

If y'all are interested in a first-hand account of what's happening on the streets of Oslo for the celebration, my friend living there promises to blog it. Apparently, there's a torch-light parade to celebrate and last year... well, go read her account:

Does anyone have a link to information on the selection process for the Peace Prize. I think he is so deserving. I would love to know who nominated him and when. Is that information kept private? This man has been handed a two-edged sword in each hand. Thankfully, he has Michelle at his side, someone on this blog mentioned months ago that the president is a very grateful man, I concur.

FLOTUS IS THE MOST FASCINATING PERSON OF 2009 FOR ON THE BARBRA WALTERS SPECIAL I AM SO HAPPY AND SHOCKED!!!! BUT HAPPY

Wednesday, December 9, 2009 at 10:54 PM | Registered Commentersierra

This is a great, low-key but just perfect look for travelling. I expect her to get off the plane in Norway in a different outfit. I think the Obamas are playing this trip down (wisely -- there is something like 25% of Americans who think he deserves the Nobel Prize) but I do hope Michelle will be wearing another of her dazzling strapless dresses for the awards ceremony.

I really like her hair up. It's more sophisticated & shows off her great cheekbones & eyes. When she has the smooth bob with sideswept bangs it's great, but the flip hairdo -- kind of suburban mom look.

Wednesday, December 9, 2009 at 11:18 PM | Unregistered Commenternonpasserat

Absolutely correct Sierra. Here is a picture of her with Barbara Walters.

Wednesday, December 9, 2009 at 11:23 PM | Registered Commenterzile

Oh that's wonderful! Thank you for posting that! She's so deserving. I hate that she's in the same company as the likes of Beck this year, but this is wonderful news nonetheless.

Woo hoo!

Wednesday, December 9, 2009 at 11:25 PM | Registered Commentermarabout40

I love this couple so, so much! I can't wait to watch this very deserving man receive the Nobel Peace prize. Denisegirl, I totally agree with all your expressed sentiments.

Sierra, I didn't watch the special, now I wish I did. Oh drat! I'm off to see if I can find it online somewhere.

I'm wondering what is up with all the updo hair? any chance we'll see a natural any time soon? It occurs to me that this might be preparing Americans for.... no straightening...

Marabout40, you and I both. I deliberately skipped it after I saw some in the line-up in the preview.
Janelle, I so agree with you.

You know, I skipped The Barbara Walters special because I did not see any mention of our Michelle in the previews. Like some of you, I am bruised from kicking myself for it now. She did look lovely, didn't she? Marabout40, you can offend me all day everyday with that comment...that President is drool-worthy, GOOD GOD HE'S HANDSOME! Meanwhile, back at the ranch, once again Flotus looks effortlessly chic. This is a snazzy traveling outfit.

Lol Marabout40, you absolutely do not offend me. He is goodlooking with a heart, brains and lovely family to match!

Thursday, December 10, 2009 at 12:32 AM | Registered CommenterEleroy

Just a heads up that some (well... The Daily Beast) are saying that Norwegians are insulted the Obamas will be in Oslo for only one day and not participating in all three days of events. My friend in Oslo says there's some grumbling from extreme right Norwegian press, but people in general understand that President Obama hasn't the time for three days.

So, perhaps the Obamas will only be at the torchlight parade/hotel balcony greeting & the medal ceremony.

They'll be missing out on the Friday evening concert, luncheon with the king, visit to the Nobel Museum and something with schoolkids.

So... I guess we'll see only one or two looks from Mrs. O.

FLOTUS looks amazing! And since red is my favorite color, that scarf does me proud :D And President Obama is very deserving of the Nobel prize. The way he ran his campaign alone, one of hope and peaceful discourse regarding our most difficult challenges is worthy of recognition alone! If I listened to pundits and polls, Id be convinced he would never be POTUS. He and the American people proved the pundits and polls wrong.

Well, they have arrived and she is in a huge lavender bow and a bluish tailored coat--very sophisticated looking. What is most impressive is how contentedly happy they look just as in the above picture. They may be playing it down, but i think they feel genuinely honored by this award to him. By the time historians write about this day, President Obama will have completed his life work and will, indeed, measure up to all the others that he will be enshrined with by this award. No reason for those of us who have a realistic view of him to downplay it.

Nonpasserat, you're absolutely on the spot...looks like Mrs. O changed for their arrival in Oslo! It might be the lighting, but I love what appears to be a shade of periwinkle (coat) and lilac (scarf)...a beautiful combination of color! Picture seen here of the Obamas' arrival:

Barbara Walters appears to have been influenced by Mrs. O.'s brooch-wearing. However, I much prefer Mrs. O.'s brooch choices over this one of Ms. W.'s!
Wish I could see Mrs. O.'s brooch more clearly...it's beautiful. Wonder if it's diamonds?

I love how they always look as if they are sharing a secret ...LOL

Love her travel look. Low key, smart and sophisticated. So far as her hair - I think she knows what she likes and it shows. The person saying that she is "preparing" us for a natural - and if she is? What would be wrong with that?

Love the clips from Oslo...I'd love to see a full length pic of the dress she wore when signing that book.

I know many people are curious about the different designers and stores Michelle Obama is purchasing from .. but are there any seamstresses out there like myself - who are pouring through pattern books looking for similar looks?

My family is a family of seamstresses, and we are having a ball looking for patterns that correspond with Michelle's looks.

Mrs Obama looked so beautiful getting off the plane. Very sophisticated and understated at the signing ceremony too. The President looked absolutely handsome with what looked like a fresh haircut. Exquisite the both of them.
May God continue to bless and protect them both and keep them strong in the face of all adversity even on this day of honor and what ought to be one filledwith pride and joy for Americans but instead find some eager to rain on their parade.

SUBTLE SOPHISTICATION

Mrs.O always has a knack for upping the ante on these trips. That red scarf is like Dorathy's pair of red shoes - MAGICAL!

While the time zone in Norway is wrecking my sleep pattern, I'm enjoying every minute of it. Thus far Mrs.O has undergone 2 out fit changes, turning up the wattage every time.

This is a very, very proud moment for the Obama family, and though the magnitude of the task before them may seem a bit overwhelming I have no doubt in my mind that both Mr. & Mrs.O will do their best.

Looking forward to hearing Mr.O's speech and the rest of the trip.

Cheers!

Anticipating what beautiful gown the First Lady will wear for the evening gala! I like this ensem with the red scarf for warmth...also, liked the outfit worn by the First Lady during Mr. President's Noble Peace Prize 'signing' ceremony in Oslo. Got just a glimpse of it on tv this early a.m.

They are always smiling. And not a lame smile, either. They realize it's incredibly important to lift their own spirits and ours, with this simple expression. They look like they enjoy the moment, both the privileges and heavy responsibilities. Their smiles convey HOPE that life is worth living and can get better even when times are hard. They are enjoying their achievements but also inspring us by displaying their joy.

Wow, I'm just seeing this photo of our Michelle arriving in Oslo. I'm crazy over this coat and scarf. Look at those purple leather gloves! Once again, not to sound like a broken record, this is the way to make an outfit three dimensional. Michael Kors said to take a color and utilize other textures and colors within that color family to make an ensemble interesting and complete. This is sharp!
