French Dressing

P090109-0127

Photo by Annie Leibovitz/Released by White House Photo Office

We are bending our own policy of not blogging about the little Os just a bit! WWD reports that Malia and Sasha O wore dresses by Dino e Lucia, a Paris-based childrenswear brand, for the first family's official portrait. Perhaps the dresses were picked out on their trip to Paris this summer?

Coupled with Mrs. O's Alaia dress, the first family's portrait certainly has a French sartorial influence! We applaud the first lady for supporting both American and international designers.

This is a good tidbit of info, Mrs. T. Thanks for giving us another excuse to look at such a wonderful picture of the Os!

If I was a mother I would surely bankrupt myself shopping for kiddies clothes in Paris. That city is packed chock o block with boutique after boutique of clothes especailly for kids. Honestly, the Parisians certainly know how to shop and cater for shoppers. I love Malia and Sasha's clothes, they look like cute little adorable princesses.

Michelle, honey, you are truly blessed. I mean truly blessed. You have a handsome powerful husband, two adorable princesses, living in a lovely home with staffers and your mother around to support you. You get up every day, doing what you are passionate about and what you enjoy. You have been out there tirelessly since you stepped into the White House doing everything possible to make a difference in America,

Honestly, I couldn't care less what you wear or how you wear it. Yes, this is a fashion blog so we admirers all say our bit but I'd love and admire you if you wore a black bin liner over your head.

May God bless and keep you and your family safe and happy. I'm done. Good Night and good bless everyone.

They look sweet as pie, simply adorable. It's refreshing that they always look like little girls. We are really proud of our First Family!

This is a brilliant portrait. They are all so beautiful, and in love with each other. The clothes only enhance the emotional ties. Simple and beautiful.

Nice outfits...However, count down to the wingnuts screaming about the price and foreignness of the outfits in an American Family photo.

BEAUTIFUL CO-ORDINATION OF COLOURS, SASHA WHITE BESIDE DAD'S WHITE,

AND MALIA'S BLACK AND GREY DRESS JUST BLENDS WITH MRS O'S BLACK DRESS.

THEY ALL HAVE BEAUTIFUL CHEEK BONES WHICH EMPHASIZES THEIR

PICTURE OF HEALTH. MICHELLE REALLY MADE ME THINK ABOUT HOW MY KIDS HAVE

SEEN ME AS A MOTHER.

IN HER INTERVIEW WITH OPRAH IN THE APR. O MAGAZINE, SHE SAYS "MY HAPPINESS

IS TIED TO HOW I FEEL ABOUT MYSELF.

I WANT MY GIRLS TO SEE A MOTHER WHO TAKES

CARE OF HERSELF." POWERFUL WORDS. SHE CONFIRMS WHAT I NOTICED WITH MY

GIRLFRIENDS INCLUDING MYSELF AND HOW WE SEEM TO HAVE THE ART OF PUTTING

FASHION TOGETHER - LIKE AN ART - WITH MOMS WHO KEPT UP WITH FASHIONALBE CLOTHING
WHILE RAISING KIDS, ESPEC. GIRLS. MY MOM WORE VERY CREATIVE CLOTHING AND

UNIQUE. I AM THE SAME WAY, AND I HAVE SEEN A COUPLE OF FRIENDS WHO HAVE

A LOW SELF-ESTEEM AND REALLY DISLIKE THE WAY THEY DRESS AND DO NOT KNOW

HOW TO CHOOSE CLOTHING. I MAY BE WRONG, BUT I THINK HAVING A MOM WHO TAKES

CARE OF HERSELF (NOW SHE DOES NOT HAVE TO WEAR THE IN-FASHION) BUT DONT

BE RUNNING OUT TO THE STORE IN JOGGING PANTS AND OLD JEANS ESP. WITH DAUGHTERS

PUT ON YOUR MAKE UP AND YOUR ACCESSORIES WHAT "YU LIKE" - TRUST ME THIS

WILL HAVE A AMAZING IMPACT ON YOUR YOUNG LADIE'S FUTURE, ESPECIALLY WHEN
THEY ARE DATING. FACIAL BEAUTY IS NOT ENOUGH.

IT'S A HEAD START, AND GIRLS LOOK AT THEIR SKIN, I HAVE BEENMOISTURIZING
MY SKIN MORE NOW WATCHING MRS. O.

MRS O ALSO SAID, EVEN WHEN WE ARE MOTHER, WIFE ETC. ETC.
DON'T PUT OURSELVES AT (IN HR CASE WOULD BE 4TH)
BE 2ND (HUBBY THEN HER, THEN KIDS WHEN IT COMES TO APPEARANCE AND A
ROLE MODEL.

I PUT MYSELF LAST IN MY FAMILY IN MANY WAYS-----WITH SHOPPING ETC.
BUT WHEN GOING OUT MY BOYS SAW ME BEING PARTICULAR ABOUT CERTAIN
THINGS AND THEY ARE THAT WAY EVEN AS MEN NOW.

BUT HERE'S THE THING, WATCHING MY MOM WITH HER FRESH MAKE UP AND
FASHION CONSCIOUS WAYS HELPED ME TO THIS DAY. IT'S LIKE KNOWLEDE OF
QUICK FIX.

WHEN YOU LOOK GOOD YOU FEEL GREAT, AND WHEN YOU FEEL GREAT YOU CAN REACH
YOUR GOALS, MRS 0 IS LIVING PROOF. THANKS FOR READING.

Love the French dresses on the girls...great portrait.

I think most little girls are dressed horribly...too much "skin" and too "grown up".

These dresses are just perfect.

i love their dresses ( i want malia's for myself!), and that's neat if those are indeed gifts they picked out on their trip.
However Mrs. T, i will say that i kind of wish you hadn't broken with your unofficial policy and posted about their clothes; the last thing these little girls need is anonymous internet critics commenting on their wardrobes (saw some of it a while back when j. crew put out that press release about their clothes). it just seems like a bit of a slippery slope in terms of chronicling their lives & choices, but that's just my two cents, feel free to take it or leave it. :)

Both Malia and Sasha look so beautiful in their Parisian dresses. What darling girls! I completely agree with you, Barbara.

I truly applaud Mr. and Mrs. O for their commitment to keeping their daughters "little girls". As the mother of a six year old girl, I am constantly fighting to find age-appropriate clothing. As she gets older, it only gets more expensive and difficult to find decent girls clothes. Skinny jeans, skulls everywhere, tight tops, etc - even at the "nice" stores. She can't run and play in those things! Very frustrating. I need to take up sewing!

I appreciate and have tons of respect for the way they parent, including keeping the girls out of the spotlight. They are beautiful girls, whom the world would exploit in a heartbeat. It's their parents' job to protect their innocence, and they are doing a wonderful job!

They look good , happy and well dressed but I do not like the picture. Again it's unbalanced: colour masses merge together giving an inpression of two separete color fields: too much white on the left and too dark on the right. Also the backgoung doesn't enhance the family on the foreground because they are wearing white and grays tones. The same confusing color masses also spoiled Mrs O oficial portrait. Have they been taken by the same person?

Perhaps I take a broader approach to Mrs. T's official mission of this website, with the result that I do not believe a little information about the girls' clothes is out of line. I think "fashion" extends to all aspects of a person's life - formost it is the way one dresses oneself, but also that person's home, the gifts she gives, the restaurants she patronizes, and even the clothing that is purchased for her children.

I understand the trepidation with which the topic of Malia and Sacha is approached, and I completely respect it. But if the conversation extends only to information like Mrs. T provides, and does not devolve into a critical feeding frenzy, I have no problem with it. The Obama daughters are in the public eye, and their parents recognize that. They did, after all, arrange for this family portrait and release it to the media. I think we can enjoy the beauty of this family, learn about the clothing they are all wearing, and not endanger the private life they desire and deserve for their children.

Kristen: Go to Hannaandersson.com. They have wonderful, age-appropriate clothing that is the best of the best!

I normally consider myself too "educated" to be interested in fashion, but since Mrs. Obama has been our First Lady, I have become very , very interested in all things about the family. It is TRULY hard to find clothing that is appropriate for "children and tweens" and it seems that she does it successfully. The children look classic, beautiful, healthy and young. Perhaps this photo will inspire other designers to offer better choices for the average consumer.

This line of clothing is available in the US via catelog. If you are a hanna andersson customer, you may well be on their mailing list.

@Christen: Thanks so much for the tip! I was not familiar that line, and there is no store located in my state. I've already found lots of cute, appropriate things at great prices!

Kristen: You're welcome! I am so happy that I could help. All three of my kids (actually no longer "kids") grew up in Hannas, and now I order for my granddaughter. Hanna Andersson clothing is so well made that it will last through several children, making it doubly useful. I'll stop now....I'm sounding like a commercial!

I wholly agree with the line you've drawn with the kids and the way in which it's flexible. Talking about a published family portrait is different from documenting their private lives through paparazzi, and talking about clothes is different from critiquing the girls. Good work in keeping it classy. I bet Mrs. O would like what you do here.
