A Picture of Health

Image by Jim Young / Reuters

First Lady Mrs. O spoke at the Department of Health and Human Services today, with a message about healthy living. Read more from the New York Times here

For the occasion, Mrs. O turned to a classic skirt and cardigan combination, wearing a black and blue purple print skirt paired with a black cardigan, the latter adorned with a jeweled brooch at the collar. To see a bit more detail on the skirt and pin, click here and here.

Update:  We have confirmed that Mrs.O is wearing Michael Kors violet and black silk ikat brush stroke print skirt. The first lady's black shell and cardigan are Michael Kors as well.

STILL not a fan of hers

She has given me permission to wear my pleated skirts again! I just got a black DKNY skirt from ebay that has these pleats and I cannot wait to wear it. I'm not a fan of wearing twin sets as such. I prefer to break up the cardigan with a shell from another twin set, but I'm going to revisit that idea. This works quite well together with the brooch as just a little something extra. I really like the pictures that shows the joy on the faces of those in attendance. It looks like she's engaging with the crowd and they are enjoying her. I know that today's topic of health care is a serious subject, but these pictures (and fashion) sure can bring some joy into your day. It did mine! This outfit works for me.

Man, on my screen the skirt looks purple, but either way it is a cute skirt!

Tuesday, October 13, 2009 at 7:10 PM | Registered CommenterNyon

The skirt is purple, not blue and seems to have been quoted on other sites as such. Nice color for the season. This is signature Mrs. O style all wrapped up in one. Big skirt, cardigans, brooches. Glad she did a muted black color for such a patterned skirt. She seems to be wearing her hair style from another day. It doesn't have the same (just got out of the stylist's chair look).

Can't wait to see what she wears tonight.

Great skirt. She looks nice and relaxed.

I love that she is addressing the health care issue. Ms. Obama is a powerhouse and a force. She has been such a posiitivve shot in the arm for the this country.

LOVE THIS WOMAN

Only one picture from tonight's event at the WH up on Getty so far: http://www.gettyimages.com/detail/91864472/AFP

Black dress with gold beading and a gold band at the hem. Slits up the sides (not too far up). She looked gorgeous - as usual.

It's wonderful that Mrs. O is participating in events that highlight & honor (and celebrate!) federal agencies. I imagine that HHS is working overtime right now dealing with the swine flue epidemic & other health issues.

I'm originally from DC & have family & friends who work for federal agencies. Not the most glamorous of jobs, but oh so necessary for a functioning government. Nice to see them getting a little pat on the back every now and then

Lovely snippet on t.v of Sheila E. cajoling/teaching a very bashful Malia to play drums...

Seriously cool!

Barbara,
Since u r "STILL not a fan of hers", why r u torturing yourself by coming to this website dedicated exclusively to our wonderful, beautiful, classy, very intelligent (u get the picture) First Lady? Go visit someone else's website that u r a fan of.

We love, admire, and respect our First Lady!

Mrs T, I suggest that when u screen these entries, that you delete all those who come here to spread their venom, we don't need that here, they have other sites that welcome that hate.

Thanks for the link marabout40.

I would love to see her dress in full length, from what I can see it looks great and her makeup is so fresh in those pink tones. Loving the look. She seems so happy and must be having the time of her life as First Lady.

Wednesday, October 14, 2009 at 3:37 AM | Unregistered Commenterjestina

This is a great fall outfit and I especially love the brooch. Do you have any idea who designed it, Mrs. T?

SHERYL: Just because Barbara said she is not a fan of Ikram, she is NOT "spreading venom," nor is she "hating." You are having a serious over-reaction. Now Mrs. T. is supposed to delete posters who have a difference of opinion, no matter how benign? LMAO!! Get a grip! Barbara is a 70 yr. old woman (I am not far behind) who is expressing her own opinion in a mild way and who has always stated it respectfully. She has also stated many times how much admiration she has for the Obamas, just as I have. Have some regard for your elders and for their right to express themselves in a non-hostile way.

Ach, Sheryl - Barbara is one of us and a Mrs. O fan!

(She was referring to Ikram in her comment.)

Sheryl, Barbara was talking about Ikram, NOT Michelle. I have been a long time reader of this site and first-time poster. Yes, there are people here with definite hate towards the Obamas, but Barbara is not one of them. Barbara has been a critic of the first lady's fashion, but never hateful towards Michelle or the family. I know it is easy to be on-edge about anonymous internet hatred, but please be careful not to respond in kind without even thinking through what people are actually saying. I love this site because of Mrs. T's work and also because of the rare helpful comment, but this hatred, on all sides, has got to stop--I'm just tired of reading mean comments all day long. Just ignore the haters and let them not get the satisfaction of gaining attention. And, in the care of people like Barbara that have a sincere criticism, listen and learn from a different opinion. I personally think Ikram is a really interesting figure in fashion right now, but I'd be interested in knowing why someone doesn't like her work.

That being said....

Michelle always makes me feel a bit discontented with my own closet! I suddenly yearn for lots of pleated fun skirts and more cardigans and definitely more broaches! Her make-up looks especially lovely here as well.

@ Sheryl
I think Barb meant she is still not a fan of Ikram.

Wednesday, October 14, 2009 at 10:10 AM | Unregistered CommenterOriginal Mrs. A

I like the purple skirt. Those abstract prints are very popular and I think they add a wonderful note of modernity and artiness.

I really wish the sniping on this site would STOP. Sheryl, I checked Barbara's link about Ikram Goldman and I did not find it critical. I think by not a "fan of hers" she meant not a fan of Ikram. (Although I suppose you might say that by inference she meant that she was not a fan of Mrs. O.)

I come to this site because I am interested in reading about fashion, and in particular how Mrs. Obama has affected the way people think about fashion and react to the choices she has made.

Speaking personally as someone 20 years old than the First Lady, I feel a bit liberated by watching Mrs. Obama and hearing how positively most people react to her choices. I am more likely to wear a full skirt and flats to a meeting now. I have dug some of my old costume jewelry out of my dresser. I fool around with multiple brooch combinations. I'll mix "real" jewelry with fake jewelry.

We are witnessing a change in what's acceptable for formal and even business occasions. It's really fun. Let's keep this discourse civil...and FUN.

What was it we said ages ago about the miseryguts who come here to say that Mrs Obama doesn't good enough?? Was it.... Bitter Betty's?! Well folkes, we got ourselves a live one.

But on to more interesting things... as per usual, Mrs O look great today. Loving the purple and the brooch on a twinset. Very nice. In the photo above there is a touch of orange just behind Mrs O. Is that from her outfit, or is it from someone further along in the row?

All:

All Barbara stated is that she does not care for Ikram. I have stated the same thing in earlier posts for awhile (and I have been a poster for a long time).

Some are quick to throw out the dreaded “hater”. Why? Because someone disagrees?

I am also not going to preface my comment with “I adore Mrs. Obama” but….. To me, that is totally unnecessary. If I didn’t admire Mrs. Obama, I would not be on this particular site.

Fashion is subjective. That is what we are supposed to be doing, critiquing fashion. Posters that I don’t want to read, I skip over and continue.

I haven’t posted in this fashion thread for a while. The back and forth bickering is enough to drive a sane woman crazy. I don’t need the nitpicking. My days are stressed already. I generally come here to look at the outfits, read some comments and move on. Nothing more and nothing less.

Wednesday, October 14, 2009 at 3:13 PM | Registered Commenterjerseygirl

Well, I wouldn't class Barbara as a hater, necessarily. But the regular, nearly daily announcement that Barbara *still* thinks Ikram doesn't help Mrs O and that Mrs O *should* dress better to serve her nation is getting a little tedious. Maybe it's my turn to be tedious too!

I think Michelle has been successful because she is a woman who follows her heart and is comfortable in what she wears even if everyone else disagrees. That said, I do agree with jerseygirl. You can disagree without being disagreeable but there are some posters who take personal offence if someone is not fond of something that Michelle is wearing. I'll be honest with you, I haven't always loved some of Michelle's outfits. I'd go so far as to say that some of them have been quite inappropriate and boring but a "hater" ??? Not me, I'm the biggest Michelle "Stan" with a coffee table full of books written about her in the last year.

As a black British woman I am choked up that someone like Michelle has single handledly come along and knocked down every single sterotype that has been thrown at black women. She's decent, intelligent, beautiful, smart, educated, married, married well, professional, raised well. I could go on but you see my point ?

In spite of this, I see nothing wrong in being honest about something she is wearing. Indeed, I made a comment about what the girls were wearing in a different thread and was shot down in flames. It wasn't anything nasty, my comments were based on personal experience. Some people need to lighten up. It really isn't that serious.

Thursday, October 15, 2009 at 8:26 AM | Unregistered Commenterjestina

No offense Jestina, but 'a coffee table full of books' on Mrs Obama does absolutely nothing for or on her behalf...

Only fills the coffers of others...some well-intentioned others not so much-

'Inapproproriate' and 'boring'...?! Totally subjective-

As for 'knocking down every single stereotype', some of the posts actually seem to want to force or nudge her right into living and being a stereotype...

Fortunately, she's far too smart, too secure and extremely self-assured to cave;

And I'm absolutely glad she's held her ground especially in these earlier days - and good for her!
