A Knockout in Cerulean Blue

Well, the gloves may have been off for the final presidential debate but Mrs. O’s style instincts most certainly weren’t. On a night with so much at stake she chose to return to the classics, with a look that offered a masterclass in the Michelle Obama signature style.

The jewel-colored shift dress has been a Mrs. O favorite since she first exploded onto our style radar back in the primaries. Last night saw her in a beautifully tailored, cap sleeved shift in a gorgeous shade of cerulean blue. We can’t confirm the designer, but with its resemblance both to this favorite from the convention and that now iconic violet shift-and-Alaia-belt combination we strongly suspect another Maria Pinto hit.

Mrs. O accessorized with another style signature-pearls with a twist. Throughout the campaign we’ve been fascinated by how she’s taken that First Lady staple and made it her own. Last night was no exception, with a classic string of pearls updated and personalized with a series of floral pins.

We know Mrs. O has a style-savvy habit of reusing and recycling her accessories - these sequined brooches have been a recurring favorite - so perhaps we can expect to see these beauties again between now and election days.

Update: Heard on the Runway confirms that Mrs. O's dress last night was indeed a Maria Pinto design.

Surly you jest? Her dress although a great color was in a word.............TOO SMALL!!!!. She continually pulled on the dress everytime she moved. If a dress is ill fitted then one should not wear it out of the house. It did not become too small while watching the debate! I LOVE Mrs. O but she missed on this one, TERRIBLY. She MUST do better.

Ummmmmmmm I thought I was allowed on this site to express MY opinion on Mrs. O's clothing?????? Am I wrong for MY opinion or am I wrong because you like her outfit? Confused at this point. Please advise.

I just love her style and whoever is dressing her is doing a wonderful job. Its both thoughtful to her husband's campaign but also thoughtful to Michelle's style. She is one of those women who shows that dressing appropriately and subtle doesn't have to be completely frumpy and un-sexy.

I thought it looked great, too. I think the tight fit was intentional--to show off her great figure. That kind of fit wouldn't be appropriate for day or street wear, possibly, and apparently MO was not wearing it earlier in the day at pre-debate appearances. However, for a night time festive occasion such as this last debate before the election, it was appropriate and beautiful.

I thought Mrs O came with it! That outfit was the business. I don't know too many women who can pull it off. She was fly. I am loving the pearls with the enhancers..anyone knows where to get one?

Michelle's blue dress for the final debate was too tight. Her upper body is smaller is size to her hips and her knees are not the best nor or her legs they are on the bow side. What was up with the flower pins on her pearl necklace? Less is better.

I thought Michelle's dress was FaBuLoUs! Her look was young and fun with a little twist on elegance and flirtiness...she ALWAYS looks great, and her figure is amazing. I love it that she does not refrain from showing off her curves...she represents real women....I LOVE IT!

Glad to see such a range of opinions. I think one of Mrs. O's greatest style strengths is her ability to accessorize. Last night she took very basic components - a solid blue dress, pearls and a few brooches - and pulled together a unique, personalized look that was completely on-brand Mrs. O. The best part is that anyone can achieve the same effect and it doesn't have to cost a fortune. It's just about being creative with your wardrobe and using what you already have in new ways.

She looked absoloutley beautiful. She would make the best first lady hands down. But I must concede...that cute blue was too tight for a first lady. I, too, think it was too small. I know it was too small because she kept adjusting it, even when she joined Barack on stage. Mrs O knows that a great fit equals comfort and thus confidence. She is beautiful but she should not make this very petty mistake as she is far too fab!

Re pearls with flowers--I don't think they were enhancers specifically for placing on a string of pearls or beads--I think they were just enamel pins or brooches that she clipped over the pearl strand. That's why they're so great, more versatile than enhancers, which can be used only on beads of a certain size, sometimes. I love it that her look is based on what she likes out of her own closet and jewelry box, not some stylist's vision.

Not crazy about the floral pins, One would have done well. Or at least all placed on the shoulder rather than scattered as they were. She still looked pretty good though.
