A Toast to Style

Photo by Kevin Lamarque / Reuters

The President and First Lady attended a state dinner at La Moneda Palace in Santiago, Chile this evening. For the event, Mrs. O wore an off-the-shoulder, empire waist dress, which hit just below the knee. More to style.

Update: The First Lady wears an "azalea off-the-shoulder silk mousseline" dress by Sophie Theallet from Spring 2011. A similar version was shown on the runway, here.

Mrs. O's necklace is comprised of navy "Baroque Chinese South Sea pearls" with diamond accents, designed by Jordan Alexander and available at Fragments.

This has to be the best evening gown I have ever seen her in. What a lovely color on her.

FLOTUS is positively ravishing. POTUS himself knows his woman is rocking that dress. Hmmmm. That knowing smile...He knows he's very blessed to have Michelle.

What a beautiful look on Mrs. Obama. I have loved every single outfit on this trip. Are there any photos of the girls online in evening wear?

Beautiful, Mrs Obama. And Mr. President, you're looking good as well.

I agree. This is a beautiful gown and it looks beautiful on her. In addition, her hair looks beautiful!

Love the neckline and the color. Not really feeling the necklace with this beautiful dress.

It's hard to pick a favorite, but I might have to agree with you ladywatcher: This one is gorgeous. Is that a little pink in the President's tie? Beautiful complement to the color of the dress... What color is the dress? Rose? Plum? I can't tell But whatever color the dress is, I love it on the First Lady. She is stunning.

Monday, March 21, 2011 at 11:37 PM | Unregistered CommenterDebra

Whoa I am running out of adjectives to describe how beautiful our First Lady looks. Another stunning gown. Wow Wow Wow!!!!

OMG!!! I have not commented in the last 50 posts...(maybe because the outfits were not interesting to me) but this dress IS SMASHING!!!! I MEAN JUST PURE BEAUTY....

The way the necklace compliments the dress is just clever!...I don't know if anyone else noticed, but I'v realized that she has been wearing some designer rings in the place of her wedding band throughout this trip overseas... and I like them!....she is truly a GREAT accessory for the POTUS!

love it! <3

I've found the whole South American trip a fashion adventure, I don't want it to end. But this dress is just gorgeous, the draping, the empire waist, the color, the fabric, the fit. Flotus, Potus, the girls...swoon!!!

Tuesday, March 22, 2011 at 1:35 AM | Registered Commenterboazwife

OMG I just love this dress, elegant and stunning! Wish we had "FLOTUS" in Australia she could teach us a thing or two on style and fashion!

Tuesday, March 22, 2011 at 3:10 AM | Unregistered CommenterRuby Lou

Me too, Donna. There are no words to describe how truly sensational Mrs Obama looks. This dress is beautiful and something that I would DEFINITELY wear myself as I don't have the flattest tummy for tight evening gowns. Both the President and First Lady make an amazing couple.

Tuesday, March 22, 2011 at 4:41 AM | Registered CommenterJestina ( London, England)

The colour is great on her, but I'm not feeling the whole neckline-elaborate necklace-hairstyle combination. I think there's a bit too much going on. Overall, though, I have loved Mrs O's wardrobe on this trip.

Tuesday, March 22, 2011 at 5:20 AM | Registered CommenterEnglish Observer

I love this dress! Beautiful dress in a gorgeous color. I think the necklace is way too heavy and detracts from the wonderful details on the dress.

Tuesday, March 22, 2011 at 5:22 AM | Unregistered CommenterChristen

Just a note, this is not an official state visit to Chile. Just not to confuse it is an official visit but not an official state visit which comes with all the pomp and circumstances form the moment of arrival until departure. .

Tuesday, March 22, 2011 at 5:53 AM | Unregistered Commenterspqr1052 Lugano, Svizzera (Switzerland)

It was a very wise color choice for wine is one of Chile's chief export product and so the toast confirms it. it shows again that Mrs O. is in tune with her hosts. I like her hair do better now.

Tuesday, March 22, 2011 at 7:13 AM | Unregistered CommenterC. Terra

@ C.Terra - I didn't realise that Mrs Obama may have been giving a gentle nod to Chile's chief export when she decided to wear a wine coloured dress. I remember when she did her first visit to Europe and she wore the Moschino blouse with the big bow in Prague and it was commented that she was giving a bow to Prague before returning to America. She is always incredibly thoughtful.

Anyway... I would never have thought that the dress was Sophie Theallet. Beautiful !!!

Tuesday, March 22, 2011 at 8:43 AM | Registered CommenterJestina ( London, England)

This is a stunning look! I hope the First Lady wears something in that deep pink/honeysuckle shade soon. I have a feeling the color would be extremely beautiful on her.

Tuesday, March 22, 2011 at 9:01 AM | Unregistered CommenterLaVonne

I thoroughly enjoyed this fashion fiesta to South America. Thanks Mrs. T.

Tuesday, March 22, 2011 at 9:06 AM | Unregistered Commentermarcelle

I absolutely love this collection from Sophie Theallet. Completely amazing!

This is one of the most gorgeous looks for Mrs. O. I love the color and the cut and the fabric. So incredibly feminine and perfect for Mrs. O. I hope there will be video of the event. When I watched it online, there were some closeups of her necklace and it is just stunning. A deep dark radiant midnight blue with some contrasting beads. Really, really super. Would love to know the designer for that.

Tuesday, March 22, 2011 at 9:10 AM | Registered Commentermeta

See, she really knows how to do evening wear! That plum color really looks great on her. The make-up wow! Her hair is wonderful LOVE the look. The necklace is interesting...its her twist away from the expected shiny bling type necklace. Overall a smashing look!

Simply stunning, beautiful. I am lost for words to deescribe.

Tuesday, March 22, 2011 at 9:34 AM | Unregistered Commenterdalejamaica

Does anyone know the designer of the green floral skirt that Mrs Obama wore to the favela ?

Tuesday, March 22, 2011 at 9:39 AM | Registered CommenterJestina ( London, England)

This is a gorgeous dress. Is she wearing it short, as on the catwalk picture, or in a long version? It looks like a dress that Nathalie Portman could have worn on her pregnant fashion tour for all the prices she won for "Black Swan".

Tuesday, March 22, 2011 at 9:53 AM | Unregistered CommenterEllen

I have to agree that Mrs. O is knocking it out of the ballpark with her attire for this trip. But what is most marvelous to me about these photos is the extreme sense of pride I feel as I see not just our President and First Lady, but the entire extended First Family making such strong and joyous connections as they travel. I love them!

Tuesday, March 22, 2011 at 10:34 AM | Unregistered Commenterouapiti

I love the dress and necklace combination. The dress is a wine color, a nod to Chile's great wines. The necklace makes a huge statement, as it is pearl with Indian diamond beads. So she is really tying the whole trade world together. Very clever Mrs. O.

Me too, Gloria. I'm in awe of this couple, truly. That's why instead of working, I'm continually checking this site and refreshing the page for pictures of the Obama's. I'm in my early 40's, probably too old for motherhood but I pray that if it's in my destiny to meet Mr Right then God (pretty please !!!!) send me a man like the President. They are always looking lovingly at each other and I think that is amazing after 18 years of marriage.

Tuesday, March 22, 2011 at 12:09 PM | Registered CommenterJestina ( London, England)

I don't remember Mrs. O wearing this color before and she looks dazzling. But I agree with English Observer and Christen that the necklace looks too heavy with this lovely dress.

She looks BEAUTIFUL! I have liked everything she has worn on this trip and the girls are just as fashionable. I love when they are all together. They left Chile this mornig and Mrs. O and Mrs. O is being her usual fashionable self with a lime green one sleeve shirt (blouse). You can see it here: http://theobamadiary.com/2011/03/22/adios-chile/

Regarding the stripey Marc Jacobs dress, it is completely sold out over here in England - completely. I've spoken to a few high end stores in London and they have told me that since the First Lady wore it yesterday, they have had orders pouring in from all over the world, from as far as the Middle East & China. I love the dress although there are mixed opinions but either way, Mrs Obama has star quality.

Tuesday, March 22, 2011 at 12:43 PM | Registered CommenterJestina ( London, England)

@ Nyon, the lemon blouse is gorgeous but I love the belt that Mrs Obama is wearing with it.

GREAT pics on Huff Po. The dress color is divine. She and the Chilean President's wife seemed to be paying homage to the booming red and purple Chilean grape industry over glasses of wine. Michelle's hair and makeup look great and I love the necklace!

The azalea dress is short:

http://cache.daylife.com/imageserve/0cFx1608QLgm9/610x.jpg

This particular necklace looks heavy. This would have been nice with her hair up and back, chandelier earrings and no necklace.

HAVE MERCY..............GIVE ME THAT DRESS!
Come on, our Michelle is holding it down! This dress looks like it designed with her in mind. She has a toned upper body that looks best with this type of neckline, and a personality to pull the rest of it together. Our President knows he's one lucky son of a gun to be accompanying her to events. You can tell by the way he glances at her......so in love. This trip just gets better, fashion-wise.
Thanks to our very own Mrs. T. She's holding her own with the latest pics!
