Arriving in Style

Photo by Jewel Samad / Getty Images

The O's much anticipated week of vacation in Martha's Vineyard is finally here. The first family was looking perfectly island chic as they landed at Cape Cod Coast Guard Station this afternoon. Mrs. O is rewearing a striped Sophie Theallet dress, last seen during the Os trip to Ghana, paired with her signature metallic ballet flats.

Have a good vacation Os!

"Christina, I don't think I would call you ma'am formally (unless you were my boss or professor or something), "

Oh, I definitely wouldn't expect that, I think we are too close in age. When I'm talking about kids calling me by my first name, I'm thinking of kids who are significantly younger than I am. I have a friend with a 15 year old daughter (I'm 37) and she calls me...well, actually, I don't know I've ever heard her call me anything, bless her heart. She probably doesn't know what to say to be polite! But I wouldn't care if she called me by my first name. An 8 year old? Eh, I'd probably prefer something else but I wouldn't scream at the kid over it.

I do say yes ma'am and no sir, and it's funny, I wasn't actually raised to do that. Certainly I was raised to be respectful, but not specifically to say "ma'am or "sir." I just picked it up from some of my friends who were raised in the South, and it stuck.

Those forms of address were so ingrained in me as a child that I was in my forties before I could bring myself to call someone significantly older than I by his or her first name. And even now, there are a couple of people who are deceased but who, when I speak of them, I still refer to as Mrs. Queen and Mr. Burns. It just doesn't feel right calling them anything else. Funny how things stick! My little neighbor girl has always called me "Miss Barb," and it's so cute!

And Nyon, I wouldn't expect you to call me "ma'am," but I'm honored that you would. :-)

It is safe to say that Ted Kennedy's support of then Senator Barack Obama thrust him into the forefront of the democratic nomination. Without him, there would be no President Barack Obama. No Michelle. Our leader and our first lady.

Senator Kennedy, thank you for the knowledge, the work, and the vision.

Rest in Peace

Christina & MsG,

yeah, thats why I said that because we are close in age and actually could party together.

MsG, I'm sure you wouldn't expect it, but I would feel awkard if I didn't.

Agreed. I was always brought up to say "Mr..." and "Mrs... " until invited to do differently by the person concerned. And so do I do now. But I'm not going to come down on anyone for referring to "the O's" here.

I have got a bit more picky with that whole Mr & Mrs thing now I'm older though. I notice that some people don't return the favour, so I wait. If I have a male boss who insists on calling me Mr Collins, then he can damn well call me Mrs Tater. Grrr.

What a sad outfit Mrs. O. is wearing while visiting Gay Head Lighthouse (gettyimages.com). Are those the same madras bermudas we saw when she was walking Bo at the White House? Some khaki walking shorts would have looked great. Mr. President is wearing khakis and he looks fabulous!
