Behind the Scenes: Congressional Spouse Luncheon

Last week, First Lady Mrs. O hosted a special luncheon at the White House for the spouses of members of Congress. In attendance was Mrs. Childers of Mississippi, wife of Congressman Travis Childers, pictured with Mrs. O above.

For the event Mrs. O wore a long black skirt, metallic shell, Moschino pearl cluster brooch and what appears to be a coordinating jacket -- trimmed with a ruffle of tulle and clusters of similar gold pearls. With her hair swept up, Mrs. O looks every bit the part of chic hostess. We love! Check out more photos from the event here.

Update: We have confirmed Mrs. O's jacket is indeed Moschino! The crepe jacket, trimmed with pearls, is from Moschino's Spring Summer 2009 collection, sold at Ikram in Chicago.

Ohhh Audrey, we certainly have a few of those. In fact, we haven't seen them for a few days but I notice that, like slugs, the rain brings them out again! There's one reason missing from your piece tho': One of the reason these folks are as negative as they are is that it gets them more attention. They think that is the way to get noticed. Sadly, it isn't. Because the happy people get bored with all the misery and go off to find other happy people to talk to instead. Well I do.

So! Todays outfit. I love it. Beautiful jacket - and I always prefer long skirts. The whole look is nice and relaxed seeing as the jacket is an edge-to-edge and doesn't button up, feminine ruffles and beads and that fabulous brooch to lighten up all that black near the face. So smart, so pretty and so elegant. I would imagine that the whole outfit would look lovely when Mrs O was moving as well, lots of interest. I also love the up-do. Can't say that I can see any problem with the make-up but frankly any woman who wears foundation runs the risk of looking "made up" in the face and not on the neck, however well you blend it in. My particular bete noir in this case being Sophia Loren and Joan Collins who just look MASKED. I noticed it more on Mrs O at the Sojourner Truth unveiling, I don't see it today.

Not loving the hair, but she wears this ensemble with panache.....LOVE the brooch with the jacket.

What is Mrs. O's most biggest beauty secret? Confidence. She isn't a classic beauty, but she is beautiful.

Thanks, Audrey. I try to avoid those people at all cost even on this post. What I love about Michelle is that she has the guts to try something new and different and she is so smart and aware of the functions that she will be attending and most of all, she does not conform to the norm. I like the edge she takes and pulls it off because of her confidence. I don't even know who is a classic beauty now with all the plastic surgery, nips and tucks.(to each his own). But I love Michell's off beat smiles and her(what we call imperfections)I am sure everyone of us here have photographs that makeup was not blended, eyes clothes, lipstick licked off, eyelash falling off, bad hair day, etc. But what I love about Michelle after reading the Times article is that at the end of the day you have to be you and people are entitled to their conversations and opinions, but when you can love yourself and be loved the way her family loves her nothing else matters.

Thanks, Audrey. I try to avoid those people at all cost even on this post. Thank you for the information. We all know these types of people.

I think Mrs. O's biggest beauty secret is that marvelous glow we see in every photo, which is the result of good health, confidence, and a beautiful spirit.

I'm enjoying reading what each of you think is Mrs. O's biggest beauty secret. Let's do more of that. It's so liberating and empowering.

I agree with what everyone else has said. I think her confidence, her health, her joie de vivre, her sense of humor, her purity of spirit, her palpable love and compassion for everyone, and her optimism are some of what shine through whatever clothes or make-up she is wearing. And perhaps one of the biggest beauty secrets that shines through is her pure joy in wearing whatever she has on without a care in the world for what anyone else thinks of it -- after all, what we or anyone else has to say about it is "just conversation". Love that.

Not wanting to be "Debbie Downer" about Mrs. O' make-up (I hope people don't think of me that way! Yikes!), I want to say that one of the times I think Mrs. O's makeup looked really, really pretty was the day she wore that pink/lavender floral sweater with the black collar and black cuffs with the over-wide belt. (You can see it be flipping back just a few pages here to older posts.) I didn't see a real close-up of her face that day, but I thought her make-up looked flawless, not too heavy, and the right colors not only for her skin tone, but to compliment that lovely sweater.

I really like Mrs. Obama's look her---the ensemble and her hair! She does look like a chic hostess.

Her ensemble is GORGEOUS; the lovely trim/seams on the jacket take off the rigidity of a standard suit while adding a playful/friendly touch- yet the overall look retains a dignified, official air . BEAUTIFUL BROOCH that complements and rounds off the ensemble.

She has SUCH a knack for dressing.

I see some of you are going through Mrs.O withdrawal LOL!, and I know some of you guys enjoyed my whitehousemuseum.org tip last time, so here is another tip about a really great website with in depth video footage about how the white house operates behind the scenes and the history of the White House grounds. It's from a week long documentary C-span did last December called "White House Week".

I posted a link to the site with some great video's but it hasn't gone up. Any way, type in the words "cspan white house week" into Google and you should find it.

They organized the site where the homepage has a great trailer for the documentary, and on the side tabs there are links to other videos categorized by the type of information. I would suggest clicking the "Interviews with White House Staff" tab and scroll through the other videos at the bottom.

Also try the "By President" tab, click on one of the presidents and scroll through the bottom to find a video with Laura Bush's picture. She gives a great tour of the private second floor residence that is normaly unseen.

I came across all this stuff during the holiday weekend and thought some of you would enjoy it.

Willow,

I don't see you as a Debbie Downer AT ALL, and you could be absolutely right about the makeup. However, I still think the lighting and the background could have a lot to do with how the makeup is seen in the photo. Her face is flooded with very strong sunlight coming through that window, and the surrounding walls are cream with a yellow tone, which is not her best background color. As we've all commented before, she looks best with pinks and lavenders next to her skin, not yellow. Just a thought.

Thanks for the Valerie Jarret article peggy. One section I liked:

One woman told me she preferred a "Laura Bush type: a gentle, wind-beneath-my-wings type." Are such expectations a burden?
Michelle doesn't spend a lot of time worrying about the scrutiny. She worries about things that she can control. So all she's going to do is to continue to be herself. She is going to dress the way she wants to dress, and she's going to be who she is, and she's going to get involved in the kinds of issues that she cares about, and my guess is the vast majority of people are going to find that endearing and terrific. Part of what has made the president and first lady so immensely able to connect with people is that they are for real. One of the requirements of being for real is to be for real. It doesn't mean every single person is going to like every single thing you do.

christina do you 1. know Mrs. T or 2. work for mrs-o.org?

Wednesday, May 27, 2009 at 6:38 PM | Unregistered CommenterBetty

@Joane

I loved that WHOLE article, Michelle has never changed she is the same woman, I love that Val highlighted that. American media feels like she did a 360, no America did a 180. Michelle wears the SAME designers has the same friends and still says whats on her mind. I remember looking at pics of the easter eag hunt back in April, there was one pic of Sasha frowning next to Mrs.O, obviously Sasha got in trouble in front of 30,000 people that day. I love it, she will discipline in front of everyone and still put a smile on her face while Sasha is unhappy.

While I am a Mrs. O fan I am going to be the bad guy and say that I simply hated her makeup. It was too heavy. That's the first time I've seen her foundation look so unnatural.
