Mrs. O at the Met (in Isaac!)

Mrs. O was in New York today, to attend the ribbon cutting ceremony for the Metropolitan Museum of Art American Wing. She found good company in Mayor Michael Bloomberg, pictured on the left.

Per the AP:

"The arts are not just a nice thing to have or to do if there is free time or if one can afford it," Mrs. O told the crowd. "Rather, paintings and poetry, music and fashion, design and dialogue, they all define who we are as a people and provide an account of our history for the next generation."

Update: First Lady Mrs. O wore Pre-Fall 2009 Isaac Mizrahi for the event! The dress and coat are purple silk wool. Click here to see the runway version of the ensemble. (Isaac's team was peeking at Mrs-O.org earlier. Click here to see. Whee!)

This evening Mrs. O will attend the American Ballet Opening Spring Gala at the Metropolitan Opera House. Stay tuned.

LOVE the color(on Mrs. O) and the style of the ensemble, but the top of the outfit is ill-fitting on her.

Beautiful and it seems a comfortable dress to wear. I would have preferred for Mrs. Obama to have sat w/o crossing her legs. Her body is toned and she looks great - but not the "right" thing to do, especially when you know you will be photographed from all angles. I am sure others will not agree...

MJMR, I kind of agree with you on the leg crossing, but boy does she look hot.

She is definately working this outfit, hair, makeup....when she hits a home run...everyone can feel it.

I am a New Yorker and was at a interior design industry event last night. Everyone was talking about her clothes and how fabulous she looks. I think her appearances really make Americans proud.

Great shoes! Nothing makes a great pair of long legs look even better than neutral shoes. And these have a little metallic in them as well, which accentuates the sheen on her legs. It's all in the details.

MJMR:

I'm glad that you had the courage to type what I've been thinking. :-)

I LOVE Mrs. O! She is a beautiful (inside and out) lady, but I've seen more of her bare knees and thighs than I've needed to.

That's the word Pat...Regal, this woman is so elegant & regal...She always looks just so uniquely & amazingly spot on!

Oh Sailorsgirl, I'd have to disagree. As Michelle sat, the dress rose barely above her knee. It didn't look inappropriate or too sexual. And we didn't see really any thigh at all. I think even though we love the First Lady, seeing such a good looking woman who exudes a natural sex appeal makes us a bit uncomfortable at times. People aren't use to seeing it this often on the national stage, especially from a Black woman in a high, non-entertainment position such as First Lady. Her legs are long, smooth, slightly thick even while toned, brown, shapely etc. They're intimidating yet enticing. I think even when we're not seeing too much skin, on a woman as tall, curvy, mocha, sexy, intelligent, affectionate and confident as Michelle -someone we follow so closely yet don't know personally- we may convince ourselves too much skin was shown.

WOW, she looks gorgeous, she looks great in purple!

I love this color, but there's something going on with the sleeves here that is not my favorite thing. I see the same issue on the model, so I know that what seems to be exaggerated sleeve length is intentional.

Still, pretty -- reminds me somewhat of the inauguration day outfit in styling if not in color. But I think that those long coats make Mrs. O appear older than she really is.

French women may have invented chic, but Michelle now owns the term. She is graceful, intelligent, and sexy, --at the Met or breaking ground in the White House garden.

Bianca,

You've articulated some excellent points! :-)

I don't think this ensemble flatters her as much as the dress she wore to the ballet. I agree with those who say it is ill fitting. I do love the color.

Well said Bianca.

I might also add that Mrs O has never worn an outfit (yet!) that has flown up in a high wind so that we can see underwear and everything else on offer! Neither has she stood with her back to the sun in an unlined skirt. Neither have we seen her sit with her legs open, or get out of a car badly.

All in all I'd say that she was just being natural, and being natural in such a way that is elegant and graceful. Lord alone knows we could do with a decrease in "How Ladies Should Sit" thinking. It's time women were PEOPLE.

I'm sure the minute there's a slip of the gusset, we'll ALL know about it.

Sitting with legs crossed when you feel like it is something that we should all be able to do, and photographers should have the decency to NOT shoot it if looks like we didn't KNOW that our knickers were on show. That's my take.

Oof! Didn't know that was such a soapboax item! LOL!

I didn't know it was such a "soapbox item" either, Posh Tater. :-)))))

Both you and Bianca have given me MUCH to think about.

Thank you! :-)

First Lady Michelle looks great in her fashions. Some will fit differently than others, but they are meant to. The purple dress fits her great, even with the oversized pockets, they are not bulky nor obstrusive. The sleeves appear somewhat bulky because First Lady pulled them up; if she pulls them down the "bulk" would smooth out. She always looks ravishing to me!!!! Absolutely love her and her fashions.

Thanks, Sailorsgirl! It was just something I'd been wondering.

By far my favorite dress. I love the color on her, and she looks sexy as all get out!

This is a WOW color on her! When I was in my 20's I wore a very similar shade sweater to work one day and a bigwig contractor who never ever even said hello to me actually stopped at my desk and told me I looked amazing. This color is a traffic stopper on olive and dark skinned women. My grandmother grew African Violets and they were this exact color!

If I'm not mistaken it's very similar to the color of the dress actress Freida Pinto wore to the SAG Awards - she was the talk of the fashion world the next day.
