Cap and Michael Kors Gown

Mrs. O gave the commencement speech at the University of California, Merced this afternoon. After their successful "Dear Michelle" letter writing campaign, graduating students successfully secured the First Lady as their commencement speaker.

Underneath her commencement gown, Mrs. O wore a Michael Kors black tank dress in bonded jersey, the same worn for her official White House portrait. (Of note, the ombre effect in the photo below is simply a photo flash.) Mrs. O added a black flower pin at the left shoulder, the same Mrs. O wore for her appearance on The View almost a year ago.

I had to turn the speech off. I was getting ready to go sing and I started to cry while I was putting on my makeup, her words were so inspiring! I would have been a red-eyed mess if I'd listened to the whole thing!

All those young people and their loved ones who sacrificed so they could see that glorious day of accomplishment...aren't we blessed to have TWO strong people in the White House? This is no "wallflower" of a First Lady! I love her honesty!

Amazing. Just amazing. I feel so blessed to be seeing this extraordinary woman having such a wonderful effect on the world we live in. They are going to change the world, these two. And it's not a moment too soon.

Growing up in the Central Valley of California (Turlock, CA), I never would have dreamed that the First Lady of the United States would be addressing the first graduating class of UC Merced. When I graduated from high school in 1991, there was no opportunities for higher education in our area, and employment opportunities were limited as well (as they are now). I'm very hopeful that Mrs. Obama's visit will be a catalyst for growth and abundance in the Merced, and the surrounding area that I call home.
