Look Good...Feel Better

Image via Flickr user Downing Street / Creative Commons In the midst of our adulation over Mrs. O's J.Crew ensemble yesterday (we're still enamoured!), we failed to highlight how the First Lady actually spent her morning. Along with Sarah Brown, Mrs. O visited Maggie's Center, a facility for cancer patients in central London. ABC News blog has a great write-up here.
"This is pretty amazing. It's an oasis. An oasis that is necessary for people who are struggling," Mrs. O told the center’s staff over a cup of steaming tea. "It's a quiet place that makes people feel whole."
The visit included a stop into the center's Look Good...Feel Better program, a public service organization that helps women, men and teens cope with appearance-related side effects of cancer treatment. The program includes two-hour workshops with 12-step skin care and make-up application lessons, demonstrations of options for dealing with hair loss and nail care techniques. Per ABC News, First Lady Mrs. O talked about her own "wonderful" makeup artist, Ingrid Grimes Myles, who volunteers for the same program in the U.S. While there's much and well-founded excitment in the wardrobe department this week, it's wonderful to see our remarkable, selfless First Lady continue to champion great social causes. (Thanks to a Mrs. O reader Christy for bringing this story to our attention!)

I think this outfit is absolutely wonderful! Love the color. Looks to me like the coat and dress are reverse color images of each other (the coat has the vibrant color in the flowers, the dress is that color with the flowers in black).
It does look better in live motion to me too. But in the pictures, I like the way the color pops against the gray Paris buildings and weather. I liked the shape of Carla's coat, but she blended in with the whole scene, which was gray. I love bright pinks in a dour setting. That made Michelle's outfit stand out even more to me.
Just a side note on the controversial teal outfit from yesterday--I saw a lot of TV footage on various networks here in the US where the girls at the school were constantly talking about how they "loved" what she was wearing and were shrieking about how stylish that teal outfit was. Go figure! The British editor of Vogue also loved it and the argyle cardigan.
It was my least liked outfit so far, but maybe Mrs. O has done her research about the likes and dislikes of each location/event she is attending and isn't dressing for just us Americans. They defined her as "Mighty Michelle" for her boldness and courage--also defined through fashion.
Today's outfit was great! Definately a hit. And I must confess, the green skirt/sweater combo from London is growing on me! I still do not like the argyle sweater though! LOL
Carla Bruni looked nice, and I thought itwas cute the way their bows coordinated. I think she (Ms. Bruni) decided to be more demure so as not to feed the 'competition' stories in the media. Shows a grace and a self confidence on her part.
BTW, do not know if it has been said, but the Daily Mail indicates that MrsO's outfit was by Thakoon. Here is a quote:
She later shed the coat to reveal a brilliant magenta dress with a metallic sheen by Thakoon.
The double-hemmed dress was of Italian silk and cost £999 - an upping of the fashion ante by Mrs Obama, who wore JCrew while with Sarah Brown in London.

I can't tell if those are black pants or black skirt - with the black sweater.
it were black pants .
I need someone to talk me down..I'm a little upset at Oscar de la Renta, Donna Karan, and Vera Wang.
I rarely look at H. Post but they are quoted criticizing Michelle b/c she is wearing Wu, Toledo, Thakoon, and J. Crew. Even though I may not care for everything Michelle has worn on this trip, these big named labels seem to want more attention and more money.
I think that's why Michelle has initially stayed away from them and used lesser-known designers through her friend Ikram. I also like the fact that Michelle has only met personally with Maria Pinto. She knows how people want to capitalize on her name. She enjoys fashion, but she doesn't want to be known as a fashionista. During this recession, it would be a political mistake to wear clothes that are too high-end. I think the Toledo dress to see the queen and coming off the plane in London wearing Wu/Kors ensemble was just too much for Oscar. He had his time with Laura Bush.
Plus, Michelle has worn Michael Kors and greatly values privacy and discretion from her hairstylist, makeup artist and clothing go-between, Ikram. Because of their blatant disrespect to Michelle while she is shining overseas, I say she should never wear their clothes until they get humbled a little bit and appreciate they got fat pockets and still do...and they should allow new designers to emerge that are grateful to be acknowledged and are talented.
I still prefer Maria Pinto out of them all and her outfits were mid-range and not too expensive.
Whew..sorry, but I don't like this while the First Lady is representing us so well overseas.
